Harriet Prescott Spofford is an early #mystery writer: "In a Cellar" (1859), "Mr. Furbush" (1865), "In the Maguerriwock" (1868).

Mary Roberts Rinehart earned $6M+ from _The Bat_ (based on her novel _The Circular Staircase_). Some film/TV versions: a 1926 silent film shown in 2024 w/live musical accompaniment; a 1959 film w/Vincent Price & Agnes Moorehead; & a 1960 TV episode w/Helen Hayes, Margaret Hamilton & Jason Robards

She was a favorite author of the Washington Post book critic Jonathan Yardley. She wrote beautifully (we lost her too soon to an aortic aneurysm).

My favorite was a bk owned by a friend of mine: a romance novel w/the hero holding the hand of the heroine & the heroine's left arm resting next to her....and then she had another hand (no, it wasn't a sci-fi novel). I think one hand was meant to be painted out...

You have to bear in mind that Heyer's mysteries were written w/ her husband (he devised the plots; she did the writing). So they are not the product of a single individual like her Regencies are.
