She was a favorite author of the Washington Post book critic Jonathan Yardley. She wrote beautifully (we lost her too soon to an aortic aneurysm).

He might enjoy Isaac Asimov's sci-fi mysteries (starting w/The Caves of Steel) & Jack Finney's classic Time and Again). For historical detective stories, Walter Satterthwait's trilogy (Escapade, Masquerade, Cavalcade) & his standalone Wilde West (w/Oscar Wilde & Doc Holliday) are fun.

You also might enjoy (although they are not historical) Joanne Dobson's series w/English prof Karen Pelletier, all w/literary themes (e.g., _Cold and Pure and Very Dead_ is based on Grace Metalious' _Peyton Place_). Dobson is prof emerita, Fordham.

One of my favorite authors is K.K. Beck. She's written both contemporary & historical mysteries. The latter includes her 3-book 1920s series _Death in a Deck Chair_, _Murder in a Mummy Case_ & _Peril Under the Palms_ & the standalone _Young Mrs. Cavendish & The Kaiser's Men_
