Hmm, chimps revise ideas in light of evidence but "humans also often refuse to update beliefs in light of new evidence, which is known as “belief entrenchment” or “belief perseveration” (many such cases)." We are screwed...

So true. Born, raised, and lived in NY til I was almost 40. Took subway and bus solo from age 12 and still take subway whenever I'm there. Travel a lot and know many US and European systems and its one of the best, and even better now than it was when I lived there!
if you're not from or have never been to new york i cannot stress enough how normal the subway is 99% of the time. kids take it to school. everyone is basically chill. you learn to be in proximity with harmless weirdos or minor irritations pretty quick. for all its issues it's an incredible thing

We should never forget the suffering that resulted from the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 80 years ago. Oh wait, I’m told this is Gaza today.

I’ve spent 3 days researching and writing this piece rebuking the grotesque NYT OpEd by Bret Stephens whitewashing Israel’s genocide of Palestinians.

I hope you take a moment to read, subscribe, and share it with your networks. Let's use truth to stop injustice:

This is really good and rings true. My daughter and son-in-law (and now granddaughter) left academic jobs in US (in the arts and humanities) for UK two years ago and i spend a lot of time there.

The continuing relevance of Stuart Hall’s work-now more than ever
Let me insist that “the academic” and “the intellectual” are not interchangeable terms: they are not the same thing: they may even be at the opposite ends of the scale. The academic life can actually prevent intellectuals [from] doing serious intellectual work. —Stuart Hall

A leaked USDA memo, reported by The New Republic, reveals Trump’s administration has banned terms like “climate,” “safe drinking water,” and “greenhouse gas emissions,” crippling scientific work and rural aid in a sweeping purge of so-called “woke” language.

@ncsce.bsky.social NCSCE's faculty and courses address racial and economic inequality through STEM education. Glad to see this program.
With generous support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and Spencer Foundation, we are pleased to be offering the Just Education Policy Institute for doctoral students interested in research to reduce racial inequality in education policy this fall. Applications are open, due June 30.
