To this day, I still make playlists based on what I’m writing and how I feel politically. My current run is cheekily called Save the Yaoi featuring emo kid favorites like Prostitution is the World’s Oldest Profession by Cobra Starship and Fourth of July (Remix) by Fall Out Boy.

This wouldn’t be complete without finding stupidity in these laws too. A minor can still listen to Freek’n You by Jodeci, opening with “every time I close my eyes I wake up feeling so horny,” or The Giver by Chappel Roan and its straight country cousin Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy. (iykyk)

To put it plainly, I could not imagine life without the music that made me. The UK banning under-13s from Spotify altogether and under-18s from listening to anything with the “E” on it is harmful.

Everyone was talking about this song from fan theories to the infamous kissing boys from girls perspectives meme. It was a cool time to be a fan when everyone was trapped inside and online during covid.

On a lighter note, I was still seventeen when Taylor Swift dropped Folklore. Betty, which was about a high school love triangle, rang: “would you have me? Would you want me? Would you tell me to go fuck myself?”

I went to a high school that echoed the first PC Principal era. There were topics shut down, wars over wokeness, and even a bake sale where people paid based on gender and race where criticism was unwelcome.

My first big project in high school was about the left tramples freedom of speech. (Oh how the turn tables…) I made a public spotify playlist at age fourteen including songs like Nugget by Cake with a refrain of “Shut the fuck up” and commentary taking a knife to consumerism and politicians.

I don’t recall anyone thinking this was a big deal. As edgy and corny as it sounds, music got me through a lot in the days of fringe, Fall Out Boy, and wearing all black. A track that always brought me joy in those brooding days was Vampire Money by My Chemical Romance: “3, 2, 1, we came to fuck.”

I was a really weird, emo, kid. Here’s photo proof. One of the first formative albums for me was Some Nights by Fun. This album featured lyrics so harmful to my young mind like “some nights, I say fuck it all.” But in my old age I like “tea parties and twitter, I’ve never been so bitter,” a lot more

At one point I remember it being taboo at school to say “ass” in California Girls by Katy Perry, but no one ever thought we were being corrupted. At twelve, I made my first Spotify account and later joined Apple music.

I got my first iPod in the first grade. (pictured here, on my head) I remember using allowance money to buy Kesha’s animal at the used record store a year or two later– parental advisory sticker and all.

Growing up I always loved music. My dad showed me 90s grunge and alternative and the British invasion while my mom introduced me to Elton John, Billy Joel, and showtunes. Both of my parents also loved Jimmy Buffett.
