Opinion | For New High School Grads, Workforce Pell Might Be Wrong Place to Start

Many young people will be better served by going straight to degree programs—not using up their Pell eligibility on short-term programs. The regulations should account for this. https://bit.ly/4iNFH5Z

Simply amazing that the Supreme Court declared an end to legal race discrimination in the affirmative action case two years ago and now allows overt racism in both immigration arrests and redistricting.

Using race to help minorities? Bad. Using it to discriminate against them? Very, very good.

Of the bottom 10 states in the country with the lowest number of students completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, nine are western states. Bill DeBaun of the National College Attainment Network has a few theories as to why.
Why do these western states have such low FAFSA completion rates?

Normally the @usdeptofed.bsky.social hosts a financial aid conference the first week of December to provide administrators with updated education on regulations.

But that hasn’t happened this year.

So @insidehighered.com talked with financial aid experts about why that's concerning.
Federal Aid Conference Delayed, University Employees Lament
Financial aid administrators are upset that the Education Department has not scheduled its annual training for them. But one official says it’s now slated for March.

We first note that hand-wringing about the decline in US college enrollments has mistakenly linked such declines to the price of four-year colleges.

But the decline is entirely driven by two-year community colleges (and by for-profit colleges). The four-year sector is the dog that didn't bark.

I REMEMBER.

In 1981, nearly 100% of people with AIDS died, often rapidly.
I remember weeping.
I remember Ronald Reagan's refusal to say "AIDS".
I remember the brave patients, loving caregivers, and the defiant power of ACT-UP.
And finally the miracle of modern therapy.

Rise up for World AIDS day.
Commemorating #WorldAIDSday is an act of defiance against ideology driven policies that will end our progress to end the epidemic.

A sad irony in Washington, D.C., where West Virginia National Guardsmen were shot today. Six days ago, a court ruled their deployment was illegal, but stayed the order pending appeal. My heart goes out to these public servants and their families. oag.dc.gov/sites/defaul...

Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. I want to share what I saw.

The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone — period.
