I wrote a little essay about “designer vaginas” and the celeb-ification of transness

Ari Drennen, journalist and LGBTQ+ director at Media Matters, tweeted the above on 14/10/25. There are three ways I can think of to analyse her comments:

newsom liberals really don’t understand what it looks like to the outside when they say shit like “it’s only 1% of the population, we’re in a war, sacrifices must be made” like ok, who’s next then?

i absolutely think the transgender liberalism that is espoused by people like judith butler has harmed us. the "identify-as" framework epistemologically erases us as a discriminated minority group with unique needs. they're illegalizing us and saying we can "simply choose not identify as trans".

Straight trans women are some of the most vulnerable members of the queer community. We can be rejected by queers AND cishets. We often end up desperate for support and validation. Cishet men are more likely see this vulnerability as an opportunity rather than something to protect. I just got lucky.

have a lot of feelings about recently out trans people electing themselves spokespersons for the entire community without having much experience engaging with the broader community or history while older trans people are mostly just burnt out

Taking off my shitposter: the reason we are being SO jokey is we clearly see these terrifying people shouldn't be in charge of everything, are destroying and stealing the entire country, we are powerless to stop it because even the Democrats hate us, and one day people will say no one saw it coming

"Let's not take the soul-sucking path of sacrificing the most persecuted for that which we deem to be most popular. I know that there are transgender children right now looking out at this world and wondering if anyone is going to stand up for them and for their simple right to exist. Well, I am."

This is also one of many reasons it doesn’t make any sense to believe that transhet women are more in harmony with heteronormativity than gay men are. If anything homophobia tends to falls HARDER on us.

There is every reason in the world to be for trans inclusion in sports, but one of the most vital reasons is every single young person should be free to engage in sports with their friends and peers, and should never be singled out, excluded, ostracized, or otherwise made to feel other or aberrant.

If you as a cis person tell me I should be more worried about the dick waving of politicians threatening to shoot each other than the ACTIVE ONGOING ELIMINATION OF MY COMMUNITY you can actually fuck all the way off.

With regards to Palestine it's often said to the newest Israeli atrocity that "no one cares because they're Palestinian", and the people who say this often get 1000s of likes. Clearly that isn't true—a lot of people do care. We need to be explicit about what the real problem is:

i never got to be a “man” the way cishet men do, they all knew at some level.

we need a better way of talking about how isolating and wrong the experience of being a repressed closeted transgender person is without defaulting to assuming the same or similar social conditioning to cisgender people

US conservatives: "You can't take down Confederate monuments and rename schools! That erases history! Even uncomfortable history is worth remembering!!"

Also US conservatives: "We removed trans people from the Stonewall monument because they're a part of history we want to erase."

I cannot emphasize this enough to any trans that sees this—get physical copies of all trans related media you can. Physical books, dvds of movies, burn music to cds like its the Limewire days. Treasure it, protect it, preserve it. This is very important

we need language that addresses the oppressions we experienced as kids that don’t imply that those things define our current self or deny others experiences. some trans men hang onto socialization language to talk abt very real childhood misogyny, but heres my take on it:

i think one of the reasons het/straight trans women discourse keep popping up is that we're overfitting a very real very powerful social force to our specific experience of it, namely :

The Body Of A Tranny Belongs To Everyone But Herself

Transmascs and straight trans women both feel a similar (justified) epistemic anxiety about their communities assuming that they are transitioning into positions of hegemonic "gendered privilege".

It's a naive assumption that greatly underestimates the extent of cissexism in our societies.

This is so accurate 😥😞😭
Being trans is America is like having a terminal diagnosis and just waiting, and no one can tell you if you’ve got 3 months or 3 years.

This is probably something that cis people would find useful, as much or more than trans people, because a lot of cis people participate in it in conversations about transness and trans folks ;3
