Full employment was not attained for a full decade after the Crisis, while households and state services took the main brunt of financial shortfalls and the bankers walked away with their bonuses.

They want appraisals capped at 3%? Cool cool. Then that becomes the legal retail price.
Seems fair right? You're wouldn't want people to deliberately make appraisal for taxes inaccurate are you?

Right. I guess I mentally define "active inference" as "information-theoretic referent configuration control" rather than as transforming things into finite belief propagation problems.

Nixon was a thing. Buchanan was a thing. The question has never been, "where did all these rightoids come from?" because they were there the whole time. The question is: what happened to all the other political forces who starved them of oxygen?

I thought post-liberals was the polite term for the groypers.

If I wanted to solve my country's economic problems I would simply not do antisemitism as a systematic replacement for a class analysis, but then again I'm not the one yelling "go back to Poland!" in the middle of Brooklyn, am I?

You can argue about whether wokeness was a cause or consequence of class dealignment/realignment. The real answer is probably "first one, then the other, at different moments."

A great many things are computationally easy once you've turned them into search over a finite graph.

Yeah, assuming that you have a pre-given tokenization of your environment, and by admitting that assumption active inference tends to fall into the same mistaken rabbit-hole as transformers do.
November 11, 2025 at 11:32 PM
Ok for slightly realer talk, even if I think active inference by message-passing is a lot of math to learn for a fairly restrictive family of computations you can tractably run, I'm glad that it's kept the tradition of energy-based modeling alive in theoretical and computational neuroscience.

Don't say (too loudly): globalize the intifada

Do say (very loudly): FREEZE THE RENT
November 11, 2025 at 11:28 PM
How could you say such a thing!?

And Mamdani proves that it works, even when you refuse to moderate on the most inflammatory culture-war opinions you hold.

I've heard a shit-ton of people say that popularism is an excuse for moderating and suppressing the Left.

We should hold rallies where everyone who works a federally funded job, either directly in a federal agency like ATCs or indirectly like scientists, wears the same T-shirt and shows out to demonstrate how many we are and how much of society our labor powers.
