Solidarity with all the IMLS staff today.
NEW — Keith Sonderling, Trump’s Deputy Secretary of Labor, has been named the Acting Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), an agency source tells me. He’ll arrive tomorrow at their office with DOGE and their security detail.

The Republicans think it's business as usual, and they are winning, with no idea they are the foot soldiers advancing a plan that ultimately will end with their demise, too.
Much of what’s happening can be explained by the fact that the Republican Party has been seized by technofascist extremists, Musk is high most of the time and Donald Trump is a pathological narcissist in full cognitive decline who owes his entire political career to a network of Russian oligarchs.

The footage from CECOT prison in El Salvador is absolutely infuriating (been using that word a lot lately) and heartbreaking. The lie that these men are convicted gang members is 100% a cover for a draconian, demented obsession with hurting innocent people as power theater. (1/2)
If the Supreme Court ultimately agrees with what the gov't is arguing today, that the President has broad Article II powers that would permit it to deport people & there can be no judicial review, then literally no one is safe.

This is nationwide. The USDA is also ending the Emergency Food Assistance Program, which comprises about 20% of what food banks in Maine distribute.

As someone who depended on WIC as a kid in rural Maine, and who moved back here to help other people, Trump and Musk's cruelty is infuriating.

"They are the plutonium pit of the MAGA bomb. Racism and domination... is not a casual pastime for them, it’s their raison d’etre. Some of the most powerful men in America are tuned in to them. They are the brain trust, the moral... nerve center of the Trump 2.0 movement."

The weirdest thing to realize about what's going on right now is that an awful lot of people, across the political spectrum, are responding to the current coup as though it were a kind of Saturnalia, and that once the necessary catharsis has been achieved, things will go back to normal. (1/2)

There are very few things happening now that would have seemed credible to me, as a third grader, had someone predicted them 35 years ago.

William S. Preston, Esquire being a leader of the American resistance against fascism is, bizarrely, one of those things.

From Ryan DeGooyer's post: "I couldn't figure out why there wasn't more outrage about impending Medicaid cuts.. then saw a lady on TV say she wasn't concerned because she's on Medi-Cal... and realized... some people don't even know THEIR benefits are being cut because states often rename Medicaid":

Midcoast Maine has one of the highest concentrations in the world of retired U.S. secret service professionals, and they have been consistently sounding alarms in conversation about this for the last year. Tl;Dr- The resistance is larger than it looks, but we need everyone off the sidelines. Now.
Their democracy died. They have lessons for America about Trump’s power grab.

The leader will be whoever has the courage to lead the charge and the willingness to sacrifice everything, including their life, to fight back.

Until then, no, there are no leaders. At best, we are shift leaders.

This is a fantastic resource for tracking bills in Congress and state legislatures. The text search, in particular, is really helpful for identifying specific initiatives when contacting representatives. (Thanks to Craig for sharing!)

We need a support group for people on the left who want to be effective participants in the resistance, but whose parent also stormed the Capitol on January 6th, and who are now wavering neurotically between the desire to preserve civil society and the anxiety that we, too, might be batshit insane.

This is the health center that I, and 85,000 other Mainers, use for primary care. The center in Belfast, especially, is a remarkable feat of rural medicine, with excellent doctors and staff.

The loss of this would be devastating. I don't think I can overstate this. Our neighbors are going to die.

Sincere thanks to the organizers of today's protest in Augusta today. They managed to retrieve a gathering that brought hundreds of people together. Many of the people I talked to had never been to a protest before, and needed this opportunity to be heard. (1/2- and will credit photographer asap)

For anyone interested in attending the national protest against Project 2025 policy (and the coup in general) in Augusta tomorrow... The organizers have done a really good job of working together and making sure that as many people can attend as possible. (1/3)
