It has been worse, but low wind in 1H2025 increased the needs.

Why gas? domestic production historically and access to North Sea resources, no hydro, low nuke and coal.

Finally, Sweden's branch organisation for the energy sector, @energiforetagen.bsky.social includes solar power in their insightful weekly statistical report.
And it delivers a few nuggets straight away:

This is availability of power source per load bin for Sweden in 2022. Wind contribution decreased at higher loads, but so did nuclear's. Hydro and import filled the gap.
"firm power" is not how I would describe nuclear in Europe over the last decade, neither new or old.

Market does seem to think that this thing is energy efficient (Siemens was supposed to supply the gas turbines to power the data centers).

From Göteborg Energis december analysis:
"Generösa nederbördsmängder, tillsammans med milda temperaturer och god tillrinning, har resulterat i ett överskott av hydrobalans"
Low usage and record-high wind production in SE are certainly factors too. I have less insights about Norway.
January 26, 2025 at 9:09 AM
Norway's hydrological energy storage levels are now at their highest ever.
Sweden is not far behind, some analysts predicting a year with low spot prices not seen since 2020.
Prices for SE3 so far are 23% lower than in January last year.

I have the unfortunate duty to inform you that earth is not limited to the Autocratic States of America.
Plenty of eggs here in the Eastern Hemisphere, come have a look!

Another interesting take is that the higher gas peak in DE is mostly due to lower coal use. So there is a clear coal-to-gas switch going on there, important when reading the industry's scaremongering.
Dec.:
24: 35 GW fossil peak, 49% gas share.
23: 40 GW, 34%
22: 43 GW, 32%
18: 47 GW, 28%

December 10, 2024 at 8:01 PM

Well, recurring occurence here in Sweden:
SvK this week: "Förlängt avbrott på Forsmark 3 på grund av sprickbildningar i skovelinfästningarna på lågtrycksturbinen. Planeras vara åter på nätet 28 januari."
I.e. extended maintenance period due to cracks.
Happened last few years, also FR 2022...

Would be interesting to compare the december merit order stack for 2024, 2022 and f.e. 2018...

Everything is relative, problem seems to be coming from the east. Interesting to see the border flows tomorrow.
Mid-week wind dip it seems.

6C, but yes, cold snaps are more severe far from the coasts.

Well, seems just a few F of difference for Toronto, as compared to Stockholm or Oslo. Main difference is the chill, translates into increased heating load I guess.
On the other hand, Toronto has more sun and wind during the winter, so there should be a workaround.

No but this is, week 47 was in the EU top 6 of weeks that produced the most wind power ever with 14TWh.
And even the Dunkelflaute week 45 had higher renewable share than the average for 2018.
Btw, no black-outs happened during those DF weeks, that should alleviate concerns...
November 25, 2024 at 8:31 AM
No crisis looming. The main factor is the high & increasing withdrawal rate, not the storage level which is at its second highest (=not depleted at all).
Makes sense to delay purchase when TTF is speculation loaded, yearly gas demand decreasing.
One Dunkelflaute doesn't make for a wolf's winter.

Eller kärnkraftverk...
November 18, 2024 at 7:31 PM
Gas: Yes, the EU has burned through its gas reserves faster than later years in November. But relative storage capacity is nonetheless at its second highest for a 15th of November since 2011 at 39 days vs 42 in 2023 and 24 in 2021.

Accounting for YoY 4% decrease in EU gas use (24Q1-3) = rosier.

Data from very valuable intermittent.energy via ENTSO-E.
For comparison, wind generation values for the same countries for the 12 months ending October 31st.
For half a day generation was less than 1% of average for the area.
