The Ford Government is a perfect case study in the failings of one-party governments.

The greenbelt scandal also comes to mind.

A one-party government will always try to get away with whatever it can against the will of the voters, and it leads to inconsistent policy and lots of wasted time.
Bill 5 is an undemocratic disaster that threatens Indigenous rights and environmental protections, pushed through by a government most voters didn’t choose.

Ontario deserves a better democracy.

It’s time for proportional representation.

Let’s call this what it is: punishing downtown ridings with bike lanes because they don’t vote PC, trying to win over suburban swing voters instead.

With proportional representation, every vote counts. Even downtown votes matter.

It’s time to demand change.

Here are the crosstabs from yesterday's poll from Research Co.

But don't just take one poll for granted, over the last two decades, there have been many polls conducted on proportional representation in Canada. Most show overwhelming support for its implementation.

Time and time again, Canadians have made themselves clear.

Between public consultation at the 2016 ERRE committee, and poll-after-poll, Canadians want proportional representation.

It's time for our elected officials to take some accountability and follow through with electoral reform.
Net-Agreement With:

Require Candidates To Attend One Public Debate: +50%
Implementing Proportional Representation: +41%
Mandatory Federal Voting: +32%
Declare Election Day A Public Holiday: +30%

Imagine being able to rank candidates and having multiple MPs elected for your region. That's STV, one form of proportional representation where party standings reflect voter preferences.
Does your local MP really matter? Ask the voters

Under First-Past-the-Post democracy, we put a lot of stake in our local representative. However, Canadian voters tend to focus more on the party that they support than the candidates themselves.

Many Canadians seriously overestimate the impact that a candidate's competency or background has on the results of an election.

"A voting system that effectively bins 3/5ths of all votes cast is leading to alienation & distrust, as stated in the party programme before the 2024 election.. The government must set up a National Commission to design a better electoral system for a better democracy"

The last time that anyone but a Conservative, Reform or PC MP was elected in rural Alberta was *1968*.

In 2025, nearly 20% of Albertans outside of Calgary and Edmonton voted Liberal.

"Safe seats" created by First-Past-the-Post deny Canadians their right to fair representation.
Seeing several press gallery journalists confirm that Conservative MP Damien Kurek is resigning so Pierre Poilievre can run in Battle River—Crowfoot.

To say that’s a safe seat is an understatement, lmao

One of the election night narratives was that expected Liberal gains in Alberta did not materialize.

While the Liberals stayed at 2 MPs, their vote share massively increased.

In 2021, Liberals received 300k votes in Alberta (15%).

This time, they got 630k (28%). They doubled it.

One of Mark Carney's first priorities should be depolarizing our politics and protecting us from foreign-funded disinformation and other deliberate attempts at division.

The best way to do that? Electoral reform. #cdnpoli www.nationalobserver.com/2025/04/30/o...

What are we waiting for? Let’s end first-past-the-post now!

Only just started going through the numbers in this election, but to me it seems like "strategic voting" was purely beneficial towards the Liberals.

No matter who the pre-election "favourite" in a riding was, there were big swings to the Liberals. In some cases, this handed wins to Conservatives.

First-past-the-post is failing voters. It fuels division, strategic voting, and regional shutouts—while pushing Canada closer to U.S.-style hyperpolarization.

The folks at @fairvote.ca and @electoralrenewalca.bsky.social have done fantastic work sharing why electoral reform is so important and the idea seems to have more support than ever.

Tomorrow, let’s all call our new MPs and tell them that this truly needs to be the last FPTP election in Canada.

Yes, please. If the Liberal party made a concrete promise on electoral reform, they would have my vote. Not the JT we-will-look-into-it promise, but a real one. Not just any electoral reform but a system based on proportional representation. No more strategic voting would be necessary.
Mark Carney said today that, while electoral reform is not a priority, he believes the Prime Minister should be neutral as avenues for reform are explored.

We agree, which is why we believe that the Liberal Party should endorse a National Citizen's Assembly on Electoral Reform.

"People don’t know how much they want electoral reform

“Wasted vote” is a phrase that is heard by every volunteer, even in close races ... If we want more people voting, let us build a system that doesn’t punish new candidates and hand a win to the minority of votes (proportional representation)."

Liberal partisans: We can’t have proportional representation—it might give extremists a platform.

Also Liberal partisans: You must vote Liberal or the CPC—who they say are extremists—could win a majority with just 40% of the vote.

Hard to miss the irony.

Nobody needs to defend Trudeau's handling of electoral reform- he's not running for office.

The report was unambiguous:
- The government should design a proportional election system.
- The overwhelming share of pro-reform testimony favoured proportional representation.

Over the last couple years, we have seen the emergence of "Strategic Voting" tools, such as @smartvoting.ca and VoteWell.

These are tools to guide voters to the best "strategic" vote to defeat a conservative in their district.

Let's talk about what this means for our democracy.
