I did not know this: “Soccer” originated in 19th c. England to differentiate association football (soccer) from rugby football (rugger). Fascinating.

“Anyone who pretends that soccer is purely an Americanism and football always has been the term used in England is simply incorrect.”
Where does the word ‘soccer’ come from?
While 'soccer' is used to differentiate between two popular sports in America, it originated at a prestigious British university
