One of those Reddit-facts that turns out to be true and that since learning it I can’t help but notice everywhere is that we Americans, almost uniquely, lean on things and further cross our legs while standing so that one heel is up in the air. This sounds like bullshit, but now you cannot unsee it.

I miss Periscope terribly and TikTok Live is a poor substitute, but I am currently watching guys play cricket in a Texas shopping center parking lot at 1AM local time.

A long time ago I idly wondered “who were the indigenous population of the British Isles?” and answering that question is so maddening, it made me question the entire concept.
A real problem of indigenous movements is, for instance, that Jericho existed before Judaism or the Palestinian people. It’s been there since the invention of agriculture. It was there before the glaciers finished retreating.

Holy Roman imperial banner? Steam it. DPRK flag? Steam it. NATO flag with a doge on it? Steam it.
It’s STEAM YOUR FLAG FRIDAY, a periodic reminder for vexillogists and people with heterodox political beliefs alike to hang your newly purchased, sharply creased flag in a running shower so you don’t embarrass yourself. Steam Your Flag Friday.

Here’s the column again in full: ft.com/content/e577...

Culture and language are often overlooked in discussions about economics and development, but I think this is a fascinating and vital topic.

Kudos to @jaredcrubin.com and co for a brilliant and thought-provoking paper.
Is the west talking itself into decline?
The data suggests that we have shifted away from a culture of progress towards one of worry

Putting this out into the world expressly so I don’t do it, but I’ve long been meaning to write up something about “mass shooter music,” because it’s absolutely fascinating, but almost certainly some kind of infohazard.

The algo has delivered to me Black Israelites livestreaming from what appears to be a classroom, with a bunch of mall ninja weapons taped to the chalkboard.
Downloaded TikTok for the first time and the algo is fascinating. It quickly cottoned on that I want videos of airplane cockpits and Vietnamese guys unloading bulk cargo ships, but steadfastly refuses to show me the two things I was promised, roughly “thick bitches” and “people arguing.”

My only position on Harvard.
This is particularly funny because Harvard, in particular, has a history of real and proper antisemitism. Not “pro-Palestinian activism,” but like “We’re going to admit 2 Jews this year. Do try not to accuse them of killing Christ.”
