What route did you take for that particular battle zone? The Dragonite build works wonders! Got 49 battles in a night without that battle zone and just fast travelled between the three available.

As far as I know, the defence stat isn't great on-foot since it's just enemy damage minus defence stat so equipment augments (including specific element resistances) are a lot more useful. Also gravity damage deals more damage to heavy armour.
