Trump's government seems unstable, but it could not survive without significant regime support from corporate, institutional, and social groups. Many of his supporting voters are not wealthy or influential, so who are the wealthy and influential people providing support to allow him to continue?
Behind the Throne: Regime support coalitions around the world, 1789-2020 Published online by Cambridge University Press: 10 March 2025 Carl Henrik Knutsen, Sirianne Dahlum, Magnus B Rasmussen and Tore Wig Abstract All regimes require supporters to govern and survive. We discuss the concept of a 'regime support group' and present and validate measures from an extensive dataset recording different features of such groups. This Regime Support and Opposition Groups (ReSOG) dataset covers approximately 2,000 political regimes from almost 200 countries, across 1789- 2020. Drawing on the knowledge of about 1,000 country experts, we estimate the size and main geographical location of regime support coalitions and key opposition actors. We also map the social basis of regime support coalitions and opponents, using a 14-category scheme covering various social groups. These data provide a unique quantitative history of the social underpinnings of regimes in the modern era. Using them, we show and discuss the broadening of support coalitions over time, especially in autocracies, the rise of major urban groups, and the relative decline of rural elites in politics, globally.

Given what's happening in the present moment, maybe some people who would have disagreed with this yesterday can acknowledge today that it's true.
I have never really understood exactly what a liberal' is, since I have heard liberals' express every conceivable opinion on every conceivable subject. As far as I can tell, you have the extreme right, who are fascist racist capitalist dogs like Ronald Reagan, who come right out and let you know where they're coming from. And on the opposite end, you have the left, who are supposed to be committed to justice, equality, and human rights. And somewhere between those two points is the liberal. As far as I'm concerned, liberal' is the most meaningless word in the dictionary. History has shown me that as long as some white middle-class people can live high on the hog, take vacations to Europe, send their children to private schools, and reap the benefits of their white skin privilege, then they are liberal'. But when times get hard and money gets tight, they pull off that liberal mask and you think you're talking to Adolf Hitler. They feel sorry for the so-called underprivileged just as long as they can maintain their own privileges. - Assata Shakur

i distinctly recall these two officers telling me that they do not have the tools to actually provide help for people, but they felt that they're expected to deal with it anyway, and they wish the city would provide the tools

i think the tools would have to be a non-police organization
screenshot of a series of my own posts from the other site, posted Apr 2, 2024 which read: i had a long conversation with a couple police officers after i was filming them arrest and drag someone away from the park they asked, "do you have any questions for us" and i replied, "are you aware of moral injury, and do you ever think about it?" turns out, they do... that's a direct quote. they were standing around waiting for bylaw officers to come take the person's belongings away, and one officer asked, "Do you have any questions for us?" and the very first thing i said was, "Are you aware of moral injury and do you ever think about it?" i eventually was able to show them that i'm not interested in blaming individual officers, and i neither like nor dislike them as individuals (because i don't have enough info) but that policing systemically does not and cannot solve these problems and once they realized that i wasn't upset at them, that i wanted to talk about policing from a systemic perspective, and to understand how they feel about it, they become more open, and it was an interesting conversation they mentioned that they don't have the tools and support to achieve the goals of helping people (in particular homeless people), and that city council seems to expect them to deal with it anyway, and that there's a lack of public support for a better system i think a lot about how even if people want to do good things, the institutions were in, and the rules and societal pressures we face, prevent us from acting the way we want, and then as we become more and more complicit, we give up on the hope of enacting change

ACLU Unchecked Growth: Private Prison Corporations and Immigration Detention, Three Years into the Biden Administration August 7, 2023 By Eunice Cho, Senior Staff Attorney, ACLU National Prison Project Three years into the Biden administration, the number of people held in ICE detention continues to grow, and private prison companies hold an increasingly tight grip on the mass immigration detention system. As the ACLU has documented before, the federal government’s immigration detention system overwhelmingly relies on private prison corporations.1 Private prison corporations, like the GEO Group, CoreCivic, LaSalle Corrections, and the Management Training Corporation have pocketed billions from ICE detention contracts in the past two decades. As a candidate, President Biden promised to stop the use of private prison companies for immigration detention. In 2021, he announced that there should be “no private prisons, period,” when addressing protesters demanding the end to immigration detention. Although the Biden administration issued an executive order in January 2021 directing the Department of Justice to phase out its contracts with private prison companies, it notably excluded ICE detention from the order.3 Since then, the number of immigrants detained by ICE — and revenues for private prison companies — have only increased. The Number of Immigrants Detained Under the Biden Administration Continues to Grow As of July 2023, ICE detains on average 30,003 people each day.4 This is a significant increase from the start of the Biden administration in January 2021, when ICE held an average of 15,444 people in detention each day.
