I wouldn't at all be surprised to hear that he begrudged the need to have a boarding pass, or even to check in!

I once (about 12 months ago) rocked up to the Ryanair gate in DUB without a boarding pass (I dropped somewhere after security), and they *still* let me onto the flight based on my passport!

I should also note that recently I mislaid the printed boarding pass between security and the gate, and when I go to the gate *my passport was enough for the Ryanair flight staff to confirm who I was and that I had checked in!*

I'm just realising that I didn't also write that none of the "facts" I list would or should ever be a reason to deny someone to board a flight.
