What happened to the Athenians and their realism is described in Xenophon's Hellenica (2.2.10). Having lost the war, Athens was forced to tear down its walls.

The latter passage is known as "the foundational statement of realism in international relations." It conveys the idea that smaller states have no real say in negotiations, as the strong will impose their will upon them as they see fit.
