Old lefty, now sort of getting a bit liberal. It may be time to panic.
Amazing how the global tech giants want to avoid paying taxes or any restraint on their growth yet cheerfully hand responsibility for the consequences of their disruption to the state (whether it’s AI or social media) expecting the state to protect the millions affected without the funds to do so.

The BBC faces an almost existential level decision. If they roll over on the Trump demands they will lose enormous integrity with most of their supporters both in the UK and around the world. If they capitulate to Trump who next, Putin? Every other despot?

Hard won reputation gone in an instant.

The racism, Islamophobia and anti semitism over on X is breathtaking. I reported several posts. Not sure why I bothered. Apparently none of them violated their rules. The only conclusion is that Musk is deliberately fomenting hatred and violence.

Appalling, kicks down on one of the poorest countries in the world.
Maybe the dumbest man alive shouldn't be making hugely impactful economic decisions
“Nobody has heard of” Lesotho, President Trump joked, to the laughter of lawmakers. He’d just cut aid to the country.

Weeks later, he announced a 50% tariff on exports from “the denim capital of Africa.”

Today, Lesotho is under a state of disaster.

I recently traveled there for @bloomberg.com:

Somewhat random post. One thing I do miss about the old days was watching a celluloid film. In the quiet scenes the only sound would be the hum and rattle of the projector, never loud enough to interfere but sufficiently present to add to the atmosphere. If you think back you can still hear it.

To be clear: deportations to increase cultural homogeneity is the text book definition of ethnic cleansing. Demands that come even close to this are so far outside any democratic norm and the rule of law. What has happened to a country when this is not condemned in the strongest possible terms?

Prime example of white privilege in plain sight.

Black kids get called adults to justify blame, while white adults get called “kids” to excuse their hate. They’re not boys and girls, they’re grown-ass men and women, and the receipts are in writing.

Macron remarks are notable- some quotes: "We have been incredibly naive in entrusting our democratic space to social networks that are controlled either by large American entrepreneurs or large Chinese companies, whose interests are not at all the survival or proper functioning of our democracies."
President Macron: “Europeans, let's wake up!

We have been incredibly naive in entrusting our democratic space to social networks.”

When Reform's Nathan Gill is sentenced for bribery, he will be the third of Nigel Farage's former MEPs to be jailed for being corrupt, after Tom Wise (expenses fraud) and Ashley Mote (falsely claiming benefits). What is it about Farage that attracts crooks?

Bear with me, I anticipate your disagreement. There is a clear pattern to the advice given to those who want to press back against rising racism. What it boils down to is that if you point out that racism is often being dressed up as “legitimate concerns” you will alienate people. /1

I grew up under apartheid. Went to university in its dying days. The apartheid state funded right wing students to provoke students and defend apartheid atrocities. Charlie Kirk’s behaviour and statement were right out of that playbook.

I will be doing this as soon as I have an address. Fellow expats and folks outside the US, I really encourage you to do this. This could have a real impact on whether they gather the audacity to do this again.
With news of a reported settlement with Anthropic I went back to check the class action form and it now allows authors outside the US to input their address, so it may be worth adding your known pirated titles (from the LibGen pirate database) www.lieffcabraser.com/anthropic-au...
