FWIW, I was approached by @timeshighered.bsky.social to comment for a piece on job cuts and the implications for staff and our practices.

We need more public awareness of what's happening in UK HE, and THE is paywalled anyway, but they're not passive actors in all of this. I said no.

Ordinarily I’d be more than happy to say something on the record about systemic workload issues. As keen as I am to contribute to a public discussion about where HE is now and the impact of this on staff and students (and perhaps to earn a little kudos for featuring in the press for ‘measurable impact’), I’m not willing to do it through Times Higher. I realise there may be a divide between the journalism and more commercial aspects of the organisation, but one lends legitimacy to the other; the rankings and consultancy game have played an in-/direct role in taking us to this point. It therefore feels incongruous to comment in your publication about the lamentable state of UK HE – and HE in general – when hierarchies and competition fostered through THE and others’ league tables and associated activities are a root cause of the problem.
