All things energy transition and batteries.

Occasional host on the Transmission podcast.

Longer reads on LI, video on YouTube and both on Modo Energy’s terminal.
Agree BESS should replace those services as more competition kicks in.

A lot of the time they will be in extra contracts like pump gen or spin gen to have flexibility in both directions as an option to the control room and that can limit full running.

Will battery storage ever beat those pumped hydro energy capacities? I doubt it, but I expect the power ratings will be beaten.

That will rival NatPower's 1GW, 4GWh system on Teeside, also expected in 2028.

And, if you'd like to compare pumped hydro, Dinorwig (Wales) leads in power ratings with 1.7GW and La Muela (Spain) in capacity with c. 24GWh or Nant de Drance (Switzerland) c.20GWh.

It'll be Britain's largest battery when it comes online (2027), replacing Statera's Thurrock (300MW, 600MWh), or Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners's Coalburn 1 (500MW, 1GWh).

But will it be Europe's largest battery?

Fluence is working with LEAG on a 1GW, 4GWh German system expected in 2028.

We discussed the route-to-market contracts in place, how scale impacts supply chain negotiations, and some of the nuances associated with this scale (e.g., having staff on site).

Pretty sure they don’t - I don’t really mind that much, happy for it to be illustrative

6x my load - this would make a huge difference to levies if demand can bump up across even a relatively small portion of housing stock.

It’s a Sigen system, on the RTE, I assumed it was being generous on where it reports inverter losses etc and essentially reporting efficiency at the cell level

France’s nuclear fleet has already adapted to renewables. It now flexes daily with solar, with median output swinging by 6 GW in 2025 from 1.5 GW in 2022.

This nuclear flexibility helps, but it does not remove solar-driven volatility. Negative prices and intraday spreads are increasing.
