Hey! In July 2022, right after I became the steward of my home, my apple tree was all alone. Fast forward to June 2025, and it's now thriving in a colorful polyculture guild filled with edible perennials and wildflowers. What a transformation! 🍏🌼 #youcandoit #climateadaptation #foodforest #💕you

I asked the tarot for some inspiration on what we can do in our gardens this week to help heal Earth! 🌍✨ Together we can make a difference right in our own backyards! 🌱 Add organic mulch, sow cover crops, treat your underground pals to molasses, and plant comfrey roots. Your soil will ❤️ you!

Balansa clover is a fast-growing cover crop that's great for improving soil health. It fixes nitrogen, boosts soil structure, and keeps weeds in check. Plus, it works well in different climates and adds organic matter when you chop it down before planting. Cold tolerant to -14F.

🍑
1. Soak your tree roots before planting.
2. If your soil is decomposed granite, line bottom of hole with cardboard.
3. Amend soil with organic material such as arborist wood chips.
4. Inoculate tree’s roots with mycorrhizal fungi.
5. Fill hole and tamp soil to eliminate air pockets.

In 2015 nations pledged to keep global temperature rise below 2C. If we fail to meet this challenge more extreme weather will hit us harder and faster, with a greater risk of passing global climate tipping points, including the collapse of critical Atlantic ocean currents.

Do you have older fruit trees? If so, I suggest planting backup trees now to prepare for even more extreme weather conditions in the future. Choose fruit trees that can tolerate both extreme heat and cold. Trees with a broader hardiness range tend to be more resilient. www.treesofantiquity.com

Lawns are ecological dead zones due to their high resource consumption and limited biodiversity. Grow a meadow in areas with rainfall. In the desert, replace the turf with native plants. #killyourlawn #nativeplants

January is a great time to move those volunteer native plants. Just grab a digging fork to gently loosen the soil and roots. Before you plant, give the roots a soak in a bucket of water. Plant, water and keep watering every few days as long as the air temperature is above 50°F. #garden #nativeplants

Do you need to water native plants in winter? Yep! If it’s dry and the soil’s over 50°F, lightly water your younger plants (under 3 years) once a week. For the older ones, just deep water them once a month. #nativeplants #drought #winterirrigation #climateadaptation

🍓 An easy way to thin out your strawberry patch is to just throw a thick layer of wood chips, hay, leaves, or any organic material over the whole bed. In spring allow the strawberry plants to grow through the material. 🍓 #gardening #climateadaptation #growyourownfood

How to delay early budding on fruit trees. 🌳 🍑 Get yourself a big ol’ bag of Surround WP and spray it on thick. Don’t forget to heavy mulch the tree’s roots to keep ‘em cool. #fruittrees #climateadaptation #gardening

Adding more Jerusalem Artichokes to the patch before the snow flies. They make a great windbreak on the North side of the raised beds (besides providing an abundance of good food). May try and ferment a batch! #sunchokes #eattheweeds #foodforest #permaculture

A few weeks ago, the seed drawers were full of seed envelopes, and now only a quarter are left. I’m thrilled to see them heading to new gardens where they’ll nourish next season’s pollinators. Plus, I’m enjoying meeting new people at the seed bank, which is always a delight. 😊

I didn’t have a grasshopper problem; I had a “barely any frogs” problem! While an unexpected invasion of grasshoppers was devouring my garden, it occurred to me that I needed to attract a friendly garden predator to protect my beloved plants.

🌿 Stridolo, a rare herb native to Italy, produces leaves that are fantastic in salads. Use it as a substitute for tarragon in soups and cooked dishes.
It thrives in heat domes and is unappealing to grasshoppers.
