Being a historian, people ask me if I think the US is living through Germany 1933.
I answer no, analogies are always imperfect but to me it feels more like Russia 1999: a blatant theft of state assets and liberals in a fugue state, refusing to believe the arc of progress is bending against them.

Gavin Newsome is not the guy. Hakeem Jefferies and Chuck Schumer are not the guys. They only believe in political power. But they don’t have the stones to stand up for anything because they don’t actually believe in what the party says it stands for. That’s why they’re capitulating.

If anyone in the future reads this. Liberal Democracy failed long before this moment. Learn from these mistakes if you can. Posting online wasn’t enough to stop the horrors. You cannot meme your way out; you will meme your way to annihilation.

It’s a Constitutional Crisis. It’s a coup d’etat. These words are appropriate for what’s happening. The question is who can stop it. Who has the courage to take radical action. Arrests. Grinding Congress to a halt. Non-compliance with blatantly illegal shit. It all matters. It has to. #crisis #coup

I’ve been trying to find a way to describe what Musk is doing to the government. He’s not taking orders from the White House, he’s not pursuing any kind of consistent ideological project other than wreaking havoc. He’s not following any laws and appears to exist outside any other authority.

Irony is dead in this moment along with common sense. Trump who squawked “but her emails” incessantly, let Musk (unelected/not a govt employee) send his crew of kids in to review classified information & plug devices of unknown origin into the government computer system, compromising everything.
