That’s a wrap on an inspiring and invigorating #AAG2025 reconnecting and making new connections. In a time when everything is under attack, it was restorative to connect with like minded folks doing important work. I got to see a bit of Detroit and hope to get the chance to come back!

Let’s be clear:

If the government can arrest, detain, and disappear peaceful protestors, none of us are free.

That’s not law and order. It’s fascism. And we should all be outraged that this is being done in our name.

Disappeared Tufts Human Dev. PhD student Rumesya Ozturk is also a graduate of Teachers College - she’s a dev. psychologist studying children’s media & prosocial development. She also bakes without recipes and binge-watches cartoons. She is our colleague & she was abducted on the street w/ our tax $.

Experience that sums up life in capitalist dystopia these days: sitting in a hotel bar watching one news station cover RFK cutting jobs, another covering arson at Tesla, and a third in between playing a pharmaceutical ad. All while “Material Girl” plays in the background.

I have never felt less like a qualified geographer than trying to navigate the maze that is the Detroit Renaissance Center. Are we SURE this isn’t a test? 🤣🤣🤣 #AAG2025

For the past few years, our team at the #DigitalOceansGovernanceLab has been hard at work building two datasets analyzing the work of Ocean Data Science Initiatives, organizations that mobilize data about the oceans with an express goal of informing or improving their condition.🧵

I’m very honored to have accepted two fellowships for next year from the Duke graduate school: a Bass Instructor of Record fellowship to develop and teach an Ocean Justice course in the fall, and a James B Duke International Research Fellowship for research in The Bahamas in the spring and summer!

Thrilled beyond belief to see this added to the official undergraduate course list for next semester and grateful to be at an institution that continues to support this kind of education.

We need alternative systems to provide non-capitalist financing to workers (like journalists) who provide public goods (like news) that everyone should have a right to access. Otherwise these goods are only accessible to those who can afford it, and investors gain more than workers or the public.
Can’t help but think there might be a relationship between people complaining about paywalls and newspapers being bought by billionaires. We should be willing to pay for news because that’s how journalists get paid.

A rather amateurish commons/commoning/autonomy/natures starter pack - feel free to suggest, or let me know if I’ve included you incorrectly… go.bsky.app/LSpFCRE

Looking forward to having this community to engage with! I am a human geographer interested in reimagining a more equitable blue economy through the lens of diverse and community economies. Love to discuss alternatives to neoliberal enclosures for more equitable and sustainable futures.
