I think it's less metaphor than statement of fact... they covet what someone else has so they must touch it and in doing so, they break it.

Your question may have been rhetorical, but I think people don't hold the liars accountable because to do so would require them to hold themselves accountable. Not for believing the lie, but for wanting the lie to be true. No one wants to know they are as ugly as the liar.
