The amazing local branch of our AFGE union just published a list of CDC employees by job series who were fired in April. 59% did scientific work.

Public Comment Toolkit The Trump Administration issued a new policy that would make it easy to fire hundreds of thousands of federal employees and replace them with political loyalists. This would make it easier to weaken our national security and dismantle the medical and Social Security benefits, clean water and safety regulations that took America out of the 1800s. We can stop them. Use this guide to submit a comment by May 23 How: Trump’s Office of Personnel Management is required to solicit public comments before the policy takes effect. OPM must review the public comments and respond to significant comments 2. If OPM does not follow these steps, federal courts can stop the policy. Commenting is your opportunity to make your voice heard and fight against this dangerous policy before it harms millions of Americans. Comments helped fight previous policies and can do so again: For example, Health and Human Services proposed reducing certain Medicare reimbursements for health care providers. Commenters pointed out errors with the studies cited by HHS. A court struck down the HHS rule because of the issues pointed out by comments. 3. What the policy does Removes civil-service protections from a new category of federal employees called Schedule Policy/Career. P/C employees become at-will workers. They lose their right to challenge terminations or appeal reclassification to the Merit Systems Protection Board. Allows agencies to identify and recommend "policy-influencing" roles into Schedule P/C. Gives the President sole authority to reclassify federal employees as P/C and removes their ability to challenge reclassification. Why it matters. Makes mass firings between administrations more likely, which weakens government expertise and efficiency. Politicizing government functions weakens continuity and the delivery of public services. The policy will remove safeguards for those refusing to break the law in favor of partisan outcomes.

Over the last two months, ICE has ramped up detentions of international students, visa holders, and green card residents — not because they’ve committed any crimes, but because of their First Amendment-protected speech.

This is an attack on dissent. Period.
