I want to be famous to shuffling men who smile while crossing streets, sticky children in grocery lines, famous as the one who smiled back.

The Friendly Beasts maybe? The Jesus Christ carol that springs to mind is Go Tell It on the Mountain, but he’s definitely a baby, not a grown-up. And no Jesus? Gotta narrow that down a bit. Is it cold? Do they sing about decor? Snowmen? A ‘54 convertible, bright blue?

My daughter Claire loved to thumb wrestle. I always started with “1, 2, 3, 4, I declare a thumb war!” When she was about 5 she told me SHE would do the talking this time, and said, “1, 2, 3, 4, I de-Mom a thumb war!” Still giggling 20 years later.

This is a great question. For me: a wooden hand cross, a bag of daffodil bulbs as a sign of hope in spring, cards that included specific memories, small framed photos, cozy blanket.
