a dark wave He traces the edge of the scooped collar, dragging one fingertip slowly over her skin, and she shivers again. It is an unimaginably intimate gesture, one that makes her breath hitch in a way she does not care to interrogate. Then he slips his finger under the fabric, and he tugs her shift down just enough to expose the dark crescent of the shadow wound above her heart. The map of new-healed skin still looks bruised and delicate; the veins blackened by the halted poison stretch like dark rivers beneath her ice-pale skin. Sauron hums to himself, one eyebrow arching as he examines the wound with something like curious understanding. “I have told you nothing,” Galadriel says again, as if she could convince herself of it by repeating it. But her voice sounds hollow. Sauron releases her slowly, a strange smile curving over almost-Halbrand’s lips. “Not yet,” he murmurs. “But you will, Galadriel. You will.”

“o’er the wasteland, a radiant relief” A water lily floats on a murky pond. “This is a dream,” she tells Sauron. “You are not here. You have no power in my realm. You cannot slither into my mind.” It is not a lie; she reassures herself. Lothlórien’s wards are holding, strong and impenetrable. He has never breached her defenses here, not in all the years she has held them. “You are not here,” she repeats. “The door is shut.” Then Halbrand reaches his hand out toward her with an infuriating tenderness, turning her chin to make her look at him. And as he does, she sees that he is missing the index finger of his right hand. Only a scarred stump remains of the knuckle where Isildur once severed the Ruling Ring from him. “Indeed,” Halbrand says. “The door is shut… and locked and barred besides.” He gives her a slow, covetous smile, a flash of wolf’s teeth. “But, Galadriel… that hardly matters when you’ve already brought me inside.”
