It seems worse to me in a way I can't quite put my finger on when Krauss is defending his very real gross behavior by invoking someone else's very likely tall tales that got out of hand informed by their badly aged ideas about what a cool scamp looks like.

As Collier has pointed out, this comes from recounts of stories Feynman told to impress someone much younger than him where he casts himself as what he thinks is a macho rapscallion.

If you've ever read The Bell Curve, one of the things that you should pick up, not unremarked by reviews when it released, is that it is written as though the reader themselves is part of the cognitive elite and is invited to think about what to do with the rabble.
November 12, 2025 at 9:27 PM
Exactly. In the great racial sorting, white people get "leadership." And this is an argument that goes all the way back to late 1800's Francis Galton style eugenics.
November 12, 2025 at 9:24 PM
It's important to remember that one of the hooks for people to get into race science arguments is flattery about belonging in the superior class. So much so that people who believe in these arguments, but don't consider themselves as part of the cognitive elite is a bit unusual.

I don't think you can understand Hanania without appreciating that he is trying to ingratiate himself in center-left circles so he can normalize his racist views there. He is calculated about this.

But man alive does i/o hate Native Americans if you pay close attention. Really embodying the spirit of why the term "BIPOC" was invented.
November 12, 2025 at 9:08 PM
i/o swerves here in seeming to put them at the top of the hierarchy along with whites, which is why you get all the speculation that about i/o's own identity. i/o just agrees with the white supremacists when it comes to black people and some other disfavored racial groups.
November 12, 2025 at 9:06 PM
Yeah, the usual view here is that East Asians are less deserving of social status for other negative traits they attribute them - docile, conformist, etc.
November 12, 2025 at 9:05 PM
Meanwhile, he is helping advance the views and causes of people with literal direct ties to neo-Nazism who definitely do not believe in Jewish superiority in a more general sense. Intellectual gifts, to the extent they believe in them, are interpreted a threatening trait.
November 12, 2025 at 9:02 PM
Heck, Scott Alexander has been one of the most effective figures in recent years in spreading race science arguments and he is a Jewish person who very much seems to take the arguments about Ashkenazi Jews as having innate genetic intellectual superiority to heart...
November 12, 2025 at 9:02 PM
While i/o curiously pro-Asian in a way that might say something about their identity, you get some in this crowd who take the "How can I be a white supremacist if I think East Asians are intellectually superior?!" arguments of Lynn et. al. as more than a fig leaf.
November 12, 2025 at 8:56 PM
i/o hates Native Americans a great deal, as well. Like, while that's not a surprising view in the eugenics crowd, i/o focuses on that a lot more than your garden variety white supremacist does.
November 12, 2025 at 8:55 PM
I think it's usually worse than than this in that it's more: So you're calling that guy over there in an orange shirt a liar???

Then someone tells him to kill himself, he's all "what the hell?" and others jump in to say, "Maybe you shouldn't delight in calling orange shirt wearers liars?"
November 12, 2025 at 6:38 PM
People just can't quit the argument that if you say anything positive about the economy in general, then that means you are telling a specific person that they are not struggling when they say they are. Such a cheap strawman that shows no signs of going out of style.

Her first two youtube videos on academia are some of my favorite videos touching the subjects she does ever. Should be taught in school good.
November 12, 2025 at 5:48 PM
I don't agree with everything she says. I actually think her Ayn Rand take in the second half of this video is a little off, but she has a real knack for building interesting angles for explaining why bad arguments are bad. As you say, her exasperated rhetorical style really drives that home.
November 12, 2025 at 5:47 PM
As she says, that's an attainable goal. You could do that. As a hobby even. It's such a great way of pointing out what they're doing is bluster to sell the idea that they're smart people who think about smart people things.
November 12, 2025 at 5:42 PM
I think where she really twists the knife in this video is when she points out that any one of these ultra-wealthy business leaders who talk about their physics dreams as a way of trying to suggest they're smart, impressive people easily could hire people to do actual physics with them.

"The Vice President shouldn't be allowed to post here because of his noxious political beliefs" is really difficult to reconcile with your prior posts that indicate a general hostility to the concept of moderation. Rules for thee, but not for me perhaps.
November 12, 2025 at 5:24 PM
I think if people pile on JD Vance specially by talking about where to find him and "handle" him, mods probably should issue some bans. There is room between overzealous moderation and any moderation.
November 12, 2025 at 5:19 PM
I used to get routine anonymous death threats from Christians in response to technical, dry posts about philosophy topics on apologetics message boards. I have no problem shrugging that off, but I also understand that's not the same thing as, say, neo-Nazis openly plotting my death.
November 12, 2025 at 5:16 PM
I think your are collapsing the degrees to which someone might be a target of meanspirited behavior. Not everyone experiences the same "cesspool" and Stancil is an extreme outlier in being a few different groups hate object/lolcow.
November 12, 2025 at 5:15 PM
To paraphrase Office Space, why should he leave when they're the ones who suck?
November 12, 2025 at 5:10 PM
I personally think that if forums should have moderation that does not permit people to egg on your murder in public and while I tend to prefer a light touch on moderation of decorum, I never agree that "leave if you don't like harassment" is a valid response to complaints about harassment.
