a long, long overdue rewatch, and one that thankfully held up perfectly! out of all of his adaptations, i think this is the one where his style best synthesizes with the original work. as far as darker superhero stories goes, this is without a doubt the definitive one.

a sort of attempt to make a big crime epic in the vein of goodfellas or alike, except through the lens of miike and his love of yakuza. feels a bit restrained overall, even if there are some occasional outbursts of the flair i expect from miike. still pretty good though.

miike takes on a story about male love behind bars, but he does it by way of the most arthouse i've ever seen him get. a non-linear and messy storyline, prison sets designed to evoke the feeling of a weird stage play and the outside world made to look almost ethereal.
