Golden shoulder piece, made around 1900-1600 BCE and found in Wales. It was part of a bigger cloak made of fabric, covered with amber, and would have been a sparkling spectacle, reminiscent of the light of the sun itself. #artsky #pagansky #heathensky #archaeology #history

From the 15th century manuscript ‘Champion des dames’, this is the first known depiction of women flying on (broom)sticks. They are Waldensians, a heretic sect associated with #witchcraft. #witchsky #artsky #arthistory #history

Arnold Böcklin, The sacred grove (1882). Symbolist painter Böcklin found much inspiration in ancient art and myth to depict late 19th century ideas about life and death. This work shows his romanticized version of what an ancient pagan cult would look like. #artsky #arthistory #symbolism #painting

Happy #worldartday! I've been drawing and painting since I was little and studied art history in my early twenties... Art is still in my life every day <3 Here's one of my own watercolor paintings, a personal fave called Whispers #artsky #fantasy #art #watercolor #painting

Fresco in the Villa of Mysteries in Pompeii, Italy, ca. 50 BCE. The complex images are thought to depict a woman’s initiation into the cult of the god Bacchus - the part depicted here probably shows a rite associated with the god. #artsky #pagansky #arthistory

John William Waterhouse, Odysseus and the Sirens (1896). This #painting was doesn't depict the sirens in the conventional Victorian way of lovely waternymphs. Instead #Waterhouse chose to depict the sirens in the original Greek way, as woman-headed birds. #arthistory #artsky #preraphaelites

John Bauer, The Root Trolls (1917). Trolls are a recurring topic in the works of this beloved #fairytale artist. The boy lying in front of the trolls was modelled by John’s own son, Bengt. #artsky #arthistory #johnbauer #fairyart

The so called "Venus" of Laussel was found in southwest France and is ca. 25.000 years old. It depicts a woman, probably a #goddess, holding a carved horn with thirteen notches. She is thought to be connected to fertility and the moon. #arthistory #artsky #pagansky #archaeology

Frans Francken – Witch’s Kitchen (1606). The subject of witches' sabbaths - as imagined by devout christians, one may add - was popular in Early Modern #art. Francken went along with this fashion and made several paintings depicting #witches and their shenanigans. #witchsky #artsky #arthistory

Bronze wheel pin, found in Beek (Netherlands), made ca 1500 – 1100 BCE. The symbol of a cross in a circle - thought to symbolize the sun - can be found all over Europe. This example is a pin used to fasten clothing, bent and thrown in water as an offering. #history #archaeology #pagansky #heathensky

Alphonse #Mucha - Zodiac (1896), meant as a calendar, showing one of Mucha’s trademark beautiful women in gorgeous clothing and jewellery, in front of a halo filled with the sigs of the zodiac. #artsky #arthistory #artnouveau

Without once mentioning the word #animism, Gary Ferguson describes just that in his breathtaking book "Eight Master Lessons from Nature" (I got the Dutch translation). #nature is our best teacher, and connecting with each other and with our environment is more important than ever. #booksky

Talking to a young witch about how #witchcraft came into my life, I told her that is was my love of fantasy and fairy art that brought me onto the magic path. This book, Fairies by Brian Froud and Alan Lee, is a beautiful gateway into #folklore and #mythology ...I've loved it for 20+ years #booksky
