I can’t speak to the veracity of that, but in general growers have been trying to replace Honeycrisp for years. The fruit is temperamental and short lasting with very shrubby high maintenance trees that need lots of small pruning. Growers want easy maintenance and storage life.

That’s as far as I got too. The main character was already so repugnant and unwieldy that I hated him so much by the time I got to that scene I was happy to put the book down.
