two thoughts:
1) the UK increasing domestic gas production and reducing their clean power target to something like 95% would be a better power sector decarb policy regime
2) MattY has a very weak grasp of energy economics and I find him frustrating to read on the subject
one extremely funny thing is that @mattyglesias.bsky.social didn't even bother to look up whether there was any domestic constituency for fracking. there isn't. there is no shale gas production in the UK and most sources report that it would not even be commercially viable to frack for it.

ah, there's the sharp wit I expect from a YLS grad.
JD Vance: "I don't know if you saw this media circulating on social media, but the president met the president of Syria, al-Sharaa, in the Oval Office a couple of days ago, and he asked him, 'How many wives do you have?' Heh heh heh heh heh! Haaaaaa! Amazing comedic timing."

“many prominent young republicans are actual Nazis” is a self-censoring fact at this point

normie swing voters will literally refuse to believe it and the media refuses to report it because it would call everything else they’ve done into question
while 'young republicans are literal nazis' is well known to folks here, the extent of it is surprisingly not that commonly known even in media and analyst circles, let alone normal people.
a real water is wet scenario here

This pic really makes the US collapse into full despotism feel real, doesn't it? Leader's dead-eyed, meritless teen son shoved into powerful role solely because Leader wills it: a marker of corrupt autocracy recognizable on every continent and in every century.
Trump said he deserved a cut for brokering the TikTok deal, and at once there was agreement that his son Baron would have a top executive slot... though he hasn't asked for it, and has no apparent qualifications to hold it. This is how Trump 2.0 works. www.telegraph.co.uk/us/news/2025...

Schumer had months to develop a coherent strategy for this moment and yet the Dems still shut down the govt without a clear ask.
Congressional Democrats need to go into a room, lock the door, and not come out unit they think of one single, popular ask of Trump that he coudn't possibly agree to without severely damaging himself, as the condition of reopening the government.

Mamdani is a total empty suit. All charisma, minimal experience, and incoherent policies. Not good if this is the future Dem local governance. Lander appeared to be a much more serious candidate.

Hegseth: "A few months ago I was at the White House when President Trump announced his liberation day for America's trade policy. It was a landmark day. Well, today is another liberation day. The liberation of America's warriors ... you kill people and break things for a living."

Failing to understand how it makes sense to exercise limited political leverage to bail the ruling party out this self-imposed dilemma.
Democrats have made a lot of demands, but in the last few days, both Jeffries & Schumer have notably not ruled out a deal of CR + ACA money.

GOP stance is 'not now, perhaps later.' But various Republicans fear political blowback if funds expire.

It's the closest thing there is to a sweet spot.

Here’s a thought.

Focus on protecting the healthcare of the American people.

Saw this the other day and some *extremely* back of the envelope math got me to potentially ~1M barrels/day of demand destruction for a year of 60% ICE sales (2024) to 3% (2030), which is approaching 1% of current global demand on its own

Gonna be interesting

This is punchy, and if they overshoot like they did on peaking emissions it's going to *radically* change the global carbon picture.

China will inevitably overshoot 10% reduction by 2035 so it’s a shame they did not put out a more ambitious target.
NEW: China's president Xi Jinping unexpectedly joins the UN climate summit, by video, to offer his nation's 2035 climate pledge

* Cut GHGs to 7-10% below peak by 2035, "striving to do better"
* Raise non-fossil share of energy to at least 30%
* Boost wind/solar to 3,600GW
