Just to be pedantic about it: the range of behavioral responses that is relevant is that of the collective patterns, not that of the indivudals.

Yeah, along these lines. Which seems to me to suggest that sometimes empathy can be withheld, if we judge it to be unjustified.

Do we consider empathy as being purely emotional reaction devoid of reason? Are we Humean, Smithian,or something else? For the record, I agree that we should work on feeling empathy in most cases.
