I'd heard this re: kinetic energy but somehow I didn't equate the term "gravity losses" with that. Asking here made me see this in a way I had not before, so I am glad I did!

For a top-level overview of what is happening, here is the official G3-watch bulletin from NOAA SWPC. Agencies are forecasting the CME to arrive early on Tuesday UT day, i.e., Monday night. CMEs can cause large geomagnetic storms, and there is a large CME headed towards us now.
