like. there isnt a guy who issues statements you can take to represent the islamic position on something. catholicism has this guy, and the guy in question spent the mid-1800s calling separation of church and state a heresy
got into an argument with someone nominally liberal but opposed to muslim immigration in europe and accidentally veered into anti-catholicism when i pointed out that the catholic church under pius IX was unambiguously more hostile to liberalism than islam now

You have to wonder* why Kemi et al are so quiet about degree apprenticeships, a reform /they introduced/ to move students from "low value" degrees onto apprenticeships with more prestige!

Is it because the way they introduced those was a mess and they don't have any real solution? Probably!
Also when they explain which businesses are going to offer these apprenticeships and how they're going to improve the high drop-out rate and poor quality of many of them.
Badenoch says the Conservatives would want fewer “low value degrees” and many more apprenticeships. As ever with such announcements I will perhaps take it more seriously when the kids of government ministers and MPs are routinely doing apprenticeships and not degrees.

If the reporting on the Peggie decision tells us anything, it should be that the way news gets reported in this country has little to do with truth, and much more to do with narrative - as well as whose heavily spun press release lands on journos desks first.

Sometimes, I reminisce about academic Twitter the same way I reminisce about theater camp. We were all together in this wonderful and complicated and often messy space for a short time, where we built community and created something wonderful. Then the summer ended, and the magic was gone.

I am every bit as worried about this as I am about e.g. the terrifying allegation that the police unlawfully discriminated against fascist football hooligans by banning them from a match, and indeed any other absolutely insane shit that our crackpot MPs keep telling our abysmal media outlets.

the vast majority of child sexual abuse happens not through the internet but through immediate relatives, and the way these people get away with it is because a) children straight up may not understand what's going on and b) children may have no independent avenues of communication to tell anyone

I don't think it can be underestimated either a) how sincerely the Starmer-McSweeney faction loathe the left on a pathological level, nor b) how thoroughly they have purged the upper echelons of anything resembling that stream of thought. They're in a Truman Show dome entirely of their own making.
Quite remarkable to see how many in Starmer's party are so trapped in a kind of Corbyn era PTSD that they can't grasp the kind of serious challenge the Greens represent rather than the 1980s flashback caricature of what Starmerites think the Left always will be.

as I've remarked before, cyberpunk isn't 'I glitch into the webframe and draw my katana', it's 'the life of a man working for a criminal syndicate in Myanmar who spends his days pretending to be different women online to steal from the elderly'
People are dying over who gets to steal from a dude in Iowa who thinks the model who "accidentally" texted him has fallen in love with him.
the Thai-Cambodian conflict is at least partially about control of the scam/gambling/prostitution compounds along the border.

this kind of knocking everything down because you won one election is really troubling. that's our information, our data, our institutions, and you're a temporary caretaker. you shouldn't be able to just raze what came before, even if you want to go in another direction. shit is really broken
It appears that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has, within the past week, scrubbed a large amount of climate change content from its official website, as well as *removed human-caused warming* from the discussion on its "causes of climate change" page.

In other words, Americans should be ashamed that a migration flow so pathetically small compared to a population of over 300 million is being used to trick them into collaborating with the destruction of their own democratic norms and institutions
The story (www.nytimes.com/2025/12/07/u...) also lets people believe a million immigrants is a lot. It's not. In 2023 there were 32 million immigrants here who arrived in the last 26 years -- well over a million a year. A healthy level of immigration is probably higher than that.
