So far I've learned a bit of painting and decorating, how to attach skirting boards, basic plastering, basic tiling and basic joinery and there is a lot of knowledge and skill that goes into them which is no less valid than academic knowledge and skills

And surface-level patterns may be what you aim for, but a lot of qualitative research aims to do more than that. I don't think this approach helps novice researchers in particular because it's important to know what you're aiming for and whether your data is appropriate

And yet it's not about the amount of data, it's about the *quality* of the data and whether it allows you to do what you aim to do, e.g., develop robust theory, explore lived experience in depth, etc. You could claim potential saturation but really only reveal surface-level patterns

Also what kind of saturation? Theoretical saturation which -- as far as I know -- is where the term comes from, is not the same as data saturation. And that's really only the first of my concerns about this kind of approach!

Sounds rather reminiscent of Newspeak to me ...

There's a tawny owl that nests in one of the trees near my house, I've not seen it but I have heard it. Less impressed by being woken up at 2am this morning by what sounded like foxes fighting though 🤦‍♀️🤣

That should read "in talk about" not "in talked about" 🤦‍♀️

Thank you Dennis, sorry to hear you can't make it - hopefully we'll see you at the next one!
