How possible is it to rescue 1.5ºC? A new report timed for the start of COP30 from Climate Analytics and PIK sets out a revision of the IPCC AR6 1.5ºC scenario which they call Highest Possible Ambition.

Whilst its easy to get used to scary graphs, this one made me pause! The 2025 State of the Cryosphere report published yesterday has this one overlaying observations of #AMOC slowdown against model predictions.

The report states that “AMOC shutdown appears all but inevitable”

Whilst a lot of what Bill Gates wrote in his memo makes a certain amount of sense, his main point that short term emissions reduction is not the priority is based on flawed and out of date data.

I’ve scribbled on his graph below to add a very important line - reality.

The construction industry’s carbon emissions are set to double by 2050, emitting enough CO2 to breach 2ºC by 2040 on their own, unless major changes are instigated.

Last month a paper on the limited availability of safe geological storage for CO2 got a lot of attention. A common comment was that it only looked at sedimentary rock, not basalt. A new study from Ireland provides an example of the basalt opportunity that exists alongside sedimentary storage.

The 2025 Global Tipping Points Report published this week has dire news: Warm-water coral reefs, on which nearly a billion people and a quarter of all marine life depend, are passing their tipping point.

“More than three-quarters of the Earth’s support systems are not in the safe zone. Humanity is pushing beyond the limits of a safe operating space, increasing the risk of destabilising the planet”, says PIK Director Johan Rockström.
All of these seven boundaries show worsening trends.

The latest report from the Planetary Boundaries Science Lab at PIK has confirmed that Ocean Acidification has now been breached. This means that 7 of the 9 planetary boundaries have now been crossed.

The Energy Imbalance Ladder breaks down the Earth’s Energy Imbalance growth into five steps, examining short wave and long wave radiation in both cloudy and clear sky areas. They describe what is happening to the planet and points to the root causes and feedbacks now in operation.

SETI offers up a lesson on sustainability. New research concludes that the closest technological species to us could be 33,000 light years away but their civilisation would have to be at least 280,000 years old to coincide with us.

Safe underground CO2 storage could only reduce warming by 0.4-0.7ºC according to a new study assessing the prudent limits of CCS. When taking a risk based approach, the industry estimates are reduced by an order of magnitude.

Perhaps we should be looking out for similar tactics from those lovely fossil fuel folks.

Something that sounds like it’s environmentally friendly but actually leads to them selling more of their damaging product and creating even more emissions.

Hydrogen for example 🤔

The study across 157 countries found that when temperatures exceed 35ºC, posts’ sentiments become about 25% more negative in lower-income countries and about 8% more negative in better-off countries. This underscores the need for better adaptation in poorer countries as global warming accelerates.

The new study analysed corals in the Maldives (lucky devils). They detect two acceleration inflection points, the first in 1959 which aligns closely with global temperature increases and accelerated glacial melt.

The rise since the mid-20th century is 30cm, now rising at 4.4mm/yr

In case you were wondering, the dinosaur tooth on my desk is from a 100 million year old Carcharodontosaurus, a European/North African member of the Allosaurus family. It has serrated edges at the front and back for cutting flesh which are still sharp.

Well no.

Net zero will leave the climate well above safe temperatures and vulnerable to tipping elements that could push the planet into the regime it last occupied when CO2 levels were so high. The stable Miocene climate, 15 million years ago, saw temperatures at 4.5ºC for today’s CO2 levels.
