I suppose my point here is that the Labour government has already introduced wealth taxes.

If you really want to tax wealth then you need to tax things those with money want to buy or can’t avoid eg. Private school fees, property, inheritance, dividends, or even private jets ✈️

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t impose a wealth tax on the basis of fairness. But in doing so you need to accept that the total tax take may end up going down rather than up - or at the very least won’t raise as much as you think. 📉

But the idea that you should base your national spending by taxing a small number of people who can easily move is not a reliable or secure way of ensuring ongoing funding for public services.
These people can just move or restructure their assets 🔧 3/

Taxes of this kind or other windfall taxes can be a useful tool to collect funds for one off costs (pandemics, defence, wealth funds etc) where there isn’t the time or mechanisms to avoid such a tax. ⏰ 2/

Last week there was talk of Reform getting almost 50% in Runcorn. Labour vote held up relatively well, with Reform mainly benefiting from the collapse of the Tory vote.

I mean - the principle is more direct in health when you consider it’s the general population (rather than those with certain conditions or experts) that rate the values of different health states that are then used for QALY calculations.

Agreed. But I also see that those paying for the system ie. Taxpayers, need to have confidence in the system to ensure long term buy in and support for the welfare state in principle. Risk otherwise is you leave space for populists/political opportunists to find excuses to start dismantling it

Or if you start studying FT. Little to no support for postgraduates with childcare but also not eligible for the full 30 hours…

Some refer to the environment created by the social and wider determinants of health as an iatrogenic environment but I’m not sure that’s the term you’re referencing?

I wouldn’t say scrapping NHS England is particularly “rightward” tbh.

Also the obvious answer is for the RFU to start doing its job and getting state schools playing rugby. Dependency on private school pupils was entirely avoidable.
