Maybe its because I'm older but all by Dad's and Mum's siblings are married. The people they are married to are a) also my aunts and uncles, b) not blood related to me.

And of course one reason things like this are unnecessary in 5E is the powering up of characters. Doing that is neither good or bad but when every party has endless castings of cantrips that give light and food those rules do become superfluous.

The OSR has a tendency to fetishize a lot of old D&D stuff but they do think about the hows and whys of stuff like this. Rations/torches/resting becoming interesting and tactical/strategic when resources are limited. We don't have to play that way but it can be fun.
