Trawling back through my late father's slides from his travels, I found this. The splash of red fabric clearly caught his artist's eye.

The re-use of building stones was not uncommon and is an early example of re-cycling🤣. Here are some examples from the C7th crypt at Hexham Abbey, which were - er - borrowed from Roman buildings along Hadrian’s Wall.
