Street scene, Syria

Trawling back through my late father's slides from his travels, I found this. The splash of red fabric clearly caught his artist's eye.

Fabulous - but slightly creepy? - Syrian glass ointment jar, made c400-550CE.

Someone had a lot of fun making this one!

Viburnum leaf

As autumn progresses, viburnum leaves take on firey shades of orange and red. Here’s one from a walk I took today with @saocousins.bsky.social

Avocet

Today I've been trying to see how little paint I can put on paper but still produce a bird😀. Here's one version.

Gull

I do love gulls. This sketch, however, had to be a very hasty 10 minutes only (dinner was nearly ready😄).

From a great 📷 by @kristina0221.bsky.social, with thanks.

Owl

Not sure which species, as this is from a screensaver photo.😄🤷‍♀️ But a scruffy little cutie, whatever.

Yes it is - also tricky to capture in paint, if you don't have access to the field you were standing in! 😂😉

Can’t believe some of these are still flowering so well in October.

Chalcolithic/Bronze Age 'beaker' pot from Argyll - dating from c2300-2000 BCE.

Someone took such care to make this vessel look beautiful.

The re-use of building stones was not uncommon and is an early example of re-cycling🤣. Here are some examples from the C7th crypt at Hexham Abbey, which were - er - borrowed from Roman buildings along Hadrian’s Wall.

Things in ‘my collection’ (of photos!) with a smile: a Delft tin-glaze baby in a high chair, dated 1764-73.

With the kind of ‘smile’ that says ‘I’m going to throw this food on the floor 😈)!
