Charlotte’s data center surge — pricey, power-hungry and shrouded in secrecy
Big Tech is pouring billions into Carolinas data centers to meet AI demand. But the public remains in the dark on the scope of what’s here and what’s coming.

There are a lot of wasteful uses of energy and fossil fuels, but using a gas powered leaf blower to clear THE STREET in front of your house might be the worst.

Fire the CEO or prepare to be fired.

The board balked.

More than one truly awful thing in this bill. In addition to CWIP, the bill also shifts a bunch of costs from industrial customers to residential folks through changing how fuel and purchased power are allocated. Guess who was in the room when this leg was written? (Hint: industrial groups)
1. The clean energy target delay is not the most important part of this bill -- Duke already faced no penalty for non-compliance.

2. The truly awful thing here is the blanket authorization for CWIP for the euphemistically-named "baseload" power plants.

It will absolutely raise pollution and bills.
North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein vetoed a bill that would’ve let Duke Energy bypass a carbon reduction goal, citing a report that found it would raise utility bills.

The Spanish government is reporting that the cause of the massive blackout wasn't a lack of thermal power plants - rather that they failed to provide power at the time, acting 'inappropriately'.

Funny, after fossil lobbyists were so quick to blame renewables..

Here's Adam Keech, VP at PJM, stating that inter-regional transmission won't help PJM "because other regions don't have excess capacity" - has he not hear of coincident peak?

This is from the FERC conference on Resource Adequacy last week.

Good morning with good news: US fossil fuel generated electricity fell to its record low share in April, down to 49.26%!

FF electricity has been below the 50% milestone in both March & April!

That is historic, as monthly FF electricity had never been below 50% since at least 1940s.

One way to know whether or not you are on the right side of history? You’re getting sued by Exxon.
Exxon Mobil sued California’s attorney general, the Sierra Club and other environmental groups on Monday. The lawsuit alleges that they conspired to defame the oil giant and kneecap its business prospects amid a debate over whether plastics can be recycled effectively.
Exxon Sues California Official, Claiming He Defamed the Company
The lawsuit, an unusual strategy for the oil giant, comes after California’s attorney general sued Exxon last year alleging it misled the public about plastics recycling.

Big tech must stop passing the cost of its spiking energy needs onto the public
We need new policies that ensure the cost of new data centers is carried by the tech companies that profit from them, not by regular energy consumers such as family households and small businesses.

Out of the box idea. How about we just delay interconnection for new large load customers until we can actually supply them (and the entire system) reliably?
This needs to be repeatedly emphasized: there's nothing about megaload growth that necessarily increases blackout risk to existing customers *unless* megaloads are prioritized over those customers. Fearmongering will not be conducive to smart decision-making. 🔌💡 www.utilitydive.com/news/explosi...

How about instead of an annual raise or indexing to inflation, we index it to the federal minimum wage? You give the lowest paid folks a raise, you get one yourself!
Members of Congress should get an annual pay raise. Better yet, raise their salaries to match the President’s salary ($400k/yr), prohibit any individual stock purchases or sales while in office, and put in a lobbying ban after office.
