So lot of good curios which are a pretty high standard but an anthology of short lived great artist ain't an album!!

Buddy Holly Brilliant of course. One of the innovative early rockers who made timeless songs. My current favourite is It Really Doesn't Matter Anymore. This though is not an album but literally a collection of everything he ever recorded!

They definitely knew how to craft a song but not strongest selection here. Another weird choice of album - but at least it's not Hollies Greatest Hits!

Some good moments here but the sound of a band in transition. Unusal for the time only one single off the album (the pretty bland and bit of a Beatles rip off Stop Stop Stop. Got to No. 2!). Influences of the time (Dylan is in there) a bit overwhelming but some strong tracks too.

Also, great title!

4C down! Should just about be done before complete climate breakdown post 2030. Bit of a mixed bag as you say - some fairly comfortable tracks alongside much more challenging ones (not a bad thing). I see this was his first album - not sure which of these avenues his career took!

Also in the middle of it there is a 15 minute clip of Billie singing with a lot of the 50s jazz greats from an American TV show.

I also caught an Arena documentary from the 80s on the Iplayer the other day. Worth a watch to hear some of her contemporaries who were still alive then. A life of persecution and attack where she still managed to produce that voice.

Amazing voice and good selection of standards but still strange choice. Early in her (too short) career where she was learning the trade. Also this is a 2002 compilation from a 2001 boxset of her Columbia recordings. Surely one of the 50s albums should be here.

Thanks Stewart!

This is OK. Few strong tracks on it. In the top 20 of NME Albums of the year in 94 where there was a lot of competition and probably merited. Production does a lot of work though. Caught a 1998 Top of the Pops recently with Courtney L singing live...very poor.

I see from the Grauniad review it took 2 years for this to be released in UK after USA. Those were the days!

This is good. Wasn't really aware of their work apart from Sequestered in Memphis which i think was from later record. Original vocal and quite a scuzzy sound which I like! Meant to be a concept album but couldn't pick up the lyrics on a couple of listens.

Pretty good. Futuristic and relaxing. Not sure what sets this apart from other European forms of this style. Maybe because he is English. But for 1979 impressive. Still playing live I note!

Great record - both timeless and unique in terms of LH voice. Lots of genre jumping but very strong tracks prevent that being a problem. There's quite a few reasons why it should not work -huge personnel, well over an hour long - but it does. Quite disciplined production (Che Pope) for the time.
