Yachts are constantly arriving from Newport, men come to see particular girls, and carry them back over the bay, if they can, on their return. Those who are left feel dreary and aggrieved, and, having very little to fall back upon, mope, and refuse to be amused.

But since dress suits and Worth costumes have crept in, since the Casino was built, and pretensions established based upon Lander's band, and other costly indulgences, sets and cliques have been formed and the whole character of the Pier has changed.

The dresses were all décolletée, and arms were in bold relief. A lady's arm may be a study for a sculptor or a valuable addition to an anatomist's museum, but in either case no good purpose is served by baring it to the shoulder joint. A resurrection of the sleeve would be a ballroom improver.

It was essentially a "smart function," as every lady had a new, fresh gown, and the fluttering ribbons of every shade and tint made as pretty a show as a yacht in holiday rig, with the flags of all nations flying from her masts.
