Curb cuts helps more than just wheelchair users, but also help moms with strollers, people with walkers, people trying to move furniture, etc. Texting was developed for the deaf, but we all benefit from it now. Aim for universal design and plan to be flexible might be the best description.

Yes I know. Some seek sensory input and others avoid it. The ridges help those with visual impairments know when they’re about to walk off a curb into traffic, but bumps a jarring and painful to me as a wheelchair user who had a spine injury. It’s still the goal we should work towards.

Universal design always benefits everyone!

How about we design things universally so they’re equally accessible to all without people having to need to request accommodations? (I know that this would be utopia, but a girl can dream right?)

I had to take SO MANY parenting classes as a 2x adoptive parent. None of the courses dealt with what it’s like to parent a disabled child. Or how to parent as a disabled individual. Things that should be taught in every health class in America.

And what if they confiscate your bag? Or it’s lost or stolen when you’re taken? So many things to consider.

That’s great to know! Thank you for the info. I work with these organizations for veteran patients all the time

$20k+ to retrofit my van for a power wheelchair. Lack of public transport in my area means adapting my own car is pretty much my only option. I can’t afford to move to a zip code with better public transport.

I need a wheelchair. But because I could walk 150ft in the hospital, with the help of a PT, and while using a walker? Nope. Not covered by insurance. I’ve been making do with what I’ve been able to source, but a good chair is thousands. That I don’t have.
