Our ongoing work is exploring the mechanisms through which different helminths can modify the bile acid pool in mouse models, and the consequences of helminth infection induced disruptions to the bile acid pool for the health of the host :)

We are excited to now add to these findings through exploring associations between different helminth infections and the fecal bile acid pool in school aged children.

Given that bile acids can regulate many aspects of gut physiology and immunity, we wanted to explore how helminth infection status might impact the fecal bile acid pool in people. Our previous work has indicated that helminth infection can disrupt the gut bile acid pool in mice! shorturl.at/JW4My
Frontiers | Chronic small intestinal helminth infection perturbs bile acid homeostasis and disrupts bile acid signaling in the murine small intestine
Soil-transmitted helminths are potent manipulators of the mammalian host immune system, and do so by dampening inflammation and inducing regulatory immune pa...

Gut-dwelling helminths are directly exposed to bile acids in the mammalian intestinal tract, and some some blood fluke infections can cause pathology in the mammalian liver, the site of bile acid synthesis.

(Spoiler, different infection statuses are associated with shifts to the bile acid pool and these differences appear to be sex-dependent!)
