Gulool Ja Ja rewards him with validation in the form of a weapon. The first swords he is gifted are small enough to be wielded by a Mamool Ja of only six summers. Though the hilts slot into his hands with an ease that feels like destiny, they're still leaden in the arms of a youth who has yet to swing a blade, let alone draw blood with one. Never has the blood heir been more aware of his diminutive stature than he is now, with his father's expectations cradled in his palms. "How do they feel?" the Vow of Resolve asks, the weight of his gaze equal to that of the implements currently wearing on Zoraal Ja's limited strength. Zoraal Ja hoists them up, attempting to emulate one of the stances he has witnessed his father take countless times. Despite the fatigue that is already hounding at his heels, he responds with a resolute, "Good." The Vow of Reason's eyes track the minute tremors in his son's arms. "Heavier than they look, no?" Zoraal Ja has not yet learned to use pride as a bulwark; thus, he answers candidly, "Yes." The Vow of Resolve gives a solemn nod. "Commit that feeling to memory. Any weapon, regardless of composition, has the capacity to harm. It is the duty of the wielder to understand this, and handle them with due care." "That is the first lesson they will impart on you," the Vow of Reason says. "A weapon does not have a will of its own. Whether it is used as a means of forging peace, or to commit indiscriminate acts of violence, falls on the bearer alone."

He finds her seated in front of the fireplace upon returning to their room at the Forgotten Knight. As he begins methodically removing his armor, it does not escape his notice that a second chair is pulled up beside her. Too stubborn to ask for the pleasure of his company in any straightforward manner, he thinks; but, he's grown accustomed to her own unique ways of asking for and displaying affection. Sidurgu takes up her offer after exchanging his gear for his sleepwear. Once he's seated, she does not hand so much as thrust a mug in his direction. "Hot chocolate," Khaliun says. As soon as he accepts the warm beverage, she proceeds to tuck herself back into her blanket along with her own mug. The image is not unlike a woodland critter skittering back into its burrow after procuring a bounty of nuts or berries, though he wisely decides to hold his tongue on the matter. "Thanks." She simply hums in acknowledgement. Her gaze remains fixated on the fire. Savoring the warmth of the ceramic against his palms, he raises it to his lips and takes a tentative sip. It's an assault to the senses. He sputters, breaking her trance long enough for her to register his expression of displeasure. "Is something amiss?" "It's bloody—" Sidurgu pauses, his tongue tingling as the taste lingers in his mouth. Her expectant gaze, as well as the knowledge that she had done this for him as a simple gesture of kindness, prompts him to be more tactful with his language."It's, um, quite sweet." Her brow furrows with what he can only interpret as genuine confusion. "You jest. I used the same amount of chocolate that I always do, and I don't find it to be so. I only added half my usual amount of sugar, as well." The hellish concoction that she describes gives him a phantom pain in his jaw. Knowing that it could be worse—far, far worse—he forces down another mouthful of it. She watches him with owlish eyes, looking oddly innocent as she awaits his verdict. The muscles in his neck tense. His teeth plead for mercy. His metabolism scrambles to make sense of whatever poison he had just ingested. "It's good though," he chokes out. He feels that it's an obvious lie, but he manages to be just convincing enough to appease her. With lips curled in a smile that reaches her rosy cheeks, she turns her attention back on the crackling fire. "Should I bring Rielle some?" she asks after a moment. Concerned for the well-being of his ward, Sidurgu responds, "She uh, she can't have sugar before bed. Makes her jittery. Keeps her up all night." "Oh." Khaliun's posture deflates slightly. "Next time, then." "Right. Next time," he echoes wearily.

When she spots G'raha sprawled out in the grass outside of the Studium, arms tucked behind his head and tail resting lazily along his side, she considers allowing him to enjoy his moment of serenity unperturbed. But the temptation to indulge in a little sunbathing of her own—particularly after a stretch of dismal weather in Old Sharlayan—and knowing that the gregarious Miqo'te has never been one to spurn her company, Khaliun approaches him. G'raha's ears twitch at the sound of her footsteps, and as she lies down beside him, he cracks open a single Allagan eye and peers at her through his lashes. "'Tis good to see you, my friend," he says, his voice a pleasant rumble accompanied by a purr that resonates in his chest. "All is well, I hope?" She hums in the affirmative. "Better, now that the weather is hospitable." G'raha chuckles, warm and honeyed. "I imagine you enjoy the cold about as much as I do. Even having spent most of my youth here, I can't quite shake my Corvosi roots." "It does dreadful things to my scales," she says. Her nose crinkles with displeasure at the thought. Recovering from Garlemald had been an ordeal in myriad ways. "I would avoid Coerthas entirely, were it not for the company that I keep." "A small price to pay for companionship, I assume," G'raha muses. He gives a languid stretch before rolling over onto his stomach, pillowing his head in his arms. "I have learned to appreciate it more, having gone a century without weather of any kind. Khaliun gazes upwards, watching the sun that she has taken for granted her entire life through the filter of a leafy bough. "You possess a greater will than I do. I would have broken long ago, were I subjected to nothing but that wretched light." He goes quiet for a moment, leaving her to wonder if he had either fallen asleep or been put off by her remark. His tone is sobering when he does respond. "I did as anyone would have, given the stakes." His tail curls around him, as if to shield him from the horrors that undoubetedly still dog his dreams. "What matters is that we're here now. And, it has given me a greater appreciation for the simple pleasures." "Like catnaps in the sun?" she ventures; an attempt at levity, to ameliorate a familiar ache for a man who had given everything, with no expectation about seeing the fruits of his labor. His laughter is sweet music to her horns. "With a friend at my side, no less."

Khaliun had intended for it to be a simple statement of fact; one that leaves no room for negotiation or second guesses, that exposes no chips or chinks in the flimsy armor holding her together in the wake of yet another tragedy. She knows that if she were to give him the opportunity to protest her decision, whatever resolve she had shored up would quickly buckle. Her proclamation hits its mark, though she cannot help but feel that it lands with all the grace of blanket artillery fire—scorching the earth at their feet, leaving once fertile soil fallow. He watches her with what she can only interpret as a grim amalgam of remorse and paternal sorrow, knowing what her decision will ultimately entail. Beneath it all, however, is the acceptance she had not needed, yet yearned for all the same. "I regret that you and Lamaty'i are left to fix the mistakes that I could not," Gulool Ja Ja says. His eyes have lost any luster, his voice its usual gravitas. "Would that I could join you and finish what I started." To see a man who had carried himself with such pride, had boasted such joyful spirit, left bedridden and enfeebled is as chilling as the anguished silence that has befallen the streets of Tuliyollal following the carnage. Khaliun places a hand in his open palm, the feeling of his scales against her skin a small comfort and welcome reminder that his heart beats still. "Zoraal Ja's atrocities are not your burden to bear," she says, her burgeoning anger a welcome old friend in the face of looming sorrow. Gulool Ja Ja's weary laughter is a thin, broken thing. "His actions are proof that I failed him as a father. I have a responsibility to make it right." "Stop it." It's the first time she has ever raised her voice with him. She is more taken aback than he, but she continues, "I'm not so arrogant as to pretend that I understand what Zoraal Ja is feeling. But regardless of his reasons, he is the only one who has to answer for his crimes." The adrenaline begins to fade. With it, her expression softens. "Punishing yourself by wondering if you loved him in the right way accomplishes nothing." Khaliun doesn't register that she's trembling until he pulls her close, the weight of his arm around her coupled with the steady rhythm of his breathing bringing her back to equilibrium. "If you are set on your course, there is something I would give you," he says by way of concession. He places in her hand a stone of garnet, its brilliance not tempered by decades of use. Golden twin fangs are emblazoned on the surface, confirming her suspicion as to the nature of it. The way the light catches on the facets produces a radiant glow. In that moment, she could convince herself that a piece of his very soul is cradled in her palm. "I can't accept this." "You will take it," he asserts, flipping her earlier script against her. "I am not able to right my son's wrongs, so I ask that you do so in my stead." He relinquishes his hold on her with a wan smile. "I have faith in you, mi luna. Trust that my crystal will teach you what I could not." There's a warmth to the stone that calls to mind memories of blood-soaked sands, aggrieved apparitions, and absolution draped in blackest night. Clutching it to her chest, it's as if she's welcoming another piece of herself home. She can only hope that he, too, will learn to forgive himself.
