Library stacks at the University of Michigan.

These places are enchanted spaces and I love them. It's here that you'll find the old, forbidden, forgotten, dusty books of trouble, rebellion, resistance, and knowledge. This place doesn't care about bestsellers, face-out displays, etc.

a couple of people have asked what the point of having UN peacekeepers on the ground to just be sitting ducks, and I just want to note this is actually in part the purpose they're supposed to sere: their *presence* is supposed to deter violence because you're not supposed to *want* to target them
On the question of whether they're human shields, well, yes, honestly: one function of this kind of mission is to serve as a tripwire. That's partly why this mission (and the mission to Cyprus) have an unusual number of European troops. The question is how many times you can trip the wire.

British airports are the only (non-party related) places where it is not only consistently OK to - but rather where one is generally expected to - drink beer at six in the morning. It feels a tiny bit like being at a parallel universe. Mallorca is where the heart is, I guess.

If there's one thing that is shared by the entire mankind, regardless of culture or place is the utter desperation to get out of a plane once it pulls into the gate. Someone should study its unifying power.

The power of sharing a meal with someone else is grossly underrated. Especially if there's some cultural dimension to it, and even more if it also involves the individuals cooking to each other. Food is one of the best ways of showing you care, of showing you dare to understand.

I guess society was/is not ready for the advent of videocalls over 4G/5G on mobile phones. It is surprising we thought we would, because we also proved not to be ready for the advent of powerful speakers built into mobile phones.
