Pritzker: "In any other country, if federal agents fired upon journalists & protesters when unprovoked what would we call it? If officials marched down streets harassing civilians & demanding their papers, what would we say? I don't think we'd have trouble calling it what it is: authoritarianism"

"Nature has learnt that, as a result, some staff members are screening candidates’ social-media presences to check whether they have expressed negative views about the Trump administration or been involved in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts...at their institutions." 🧪
NEW: In an unprecedented move, the NIH will soon disinvite dozens of scientists about to take positions on advisory councils that make final decisions on grant funding.

NIH staff were told to select others aligned with the Trump administration and told to expect placements by political appointees.
Exclusive: NIH to dismiss dozens of grant reviewers to align with Trump priorities
The move would undo years of work, leaving advisory councils understaffed, and without the full expertise needed for reviews.

The message is: crowd large.

Many politicians, administrators, and business leaders, in bowing to Trump, have drawn confidence and comfort from the perceived vibe shift.

Events like this puncture that delusion.
You can stop asking where the mass opposition is. It's everywhere.
People poured out to protest not only what Trump has done—and what they fear he will do next.

You do not have to comply with illegal executive orders. I KNOW white people, especially the ones who have power apparently, are congenitally missing a backbone but you. have. cover. here!!!! “We will comply if and when this is proven legal” is a very fair and actually conservative position to take!

Reiterating my call to fellow federally-funded scientists: Call your reps, tell them how this hurts science and everything good that comes from science

(Also non-scientists, and scientists without federal funding! But the more of us who can directly speak to the impacts of these freezes the better)
The National Science Foundation cancelled over 60 grant review panels today, effectively grinding funding of new projects to a halt.

The so-far indefinite pause comes as NSF grapples with the impact Trump's executive orders will have on their grantmaking process.
