Looking back, I wonder if that advice was of a piece with everything else my undergrad professors told us to scare us away from the field. “Only do this if you couldn’t imagine yourself doing anything else,” “the opportunity costs are super high,” etc.

In undergrad in 2015 at a SLAC, I was told to apply to “all of the top Leiter programs” and eventually applied to 16. I recall that most of my acquaintances c.2017 applied to around that many

Legitimacy can involve a combination of different things: right to rule, effectiveness, citizens’ duties to obey, threshold of popular support, constitutional backing, etc. Even if several of these are greatly diminished for SCOTUS, it doesn’t follow that all laws+institutions are worthless/dead.
