Special interest grief is a disenfranchised grief. When a special interest becomes inaccessible it can feel like losing part of yourself. For many neurodivergent ppl these aren’t hobbies they’re ways of making sense of the world, regulating overwhelm, finding joy, expressing identity. It's valid & real.

A quote from the brilliant Alexandra Derwen, shared during our end of life doula panel at last year’s Lifting the Lid Festival. Now on my wall as a daily reminder of why I’m here and how I want to show up.

It was such a joy to be invited onto @ashgatehospice.bsky.social The Life & Death podcast to talk about end of life doulas. Even more special to visit and tour the hospice in my hometown on the edge of the Peak District where my roots run deep 💚

I found this drawing I did when I was little, "The Mistree (🥹) of Deth". I'm lucky to have grown up in a family where death was something approached with curiosity. It rooted me in a deeper appreciation for being here now.
No surprise that this thread has followed me into the work I do today 😊

New @yorkuniversity.bsky.social research confirms what many of us feel: spending time in nature reduces anxiety and depression symptoms. Personally and professionally I know noticing natures life-decay-regeneration cycle and getting your hands in the earth are powerful ways of reducing #DeathAnxiety

On my recent trip to Dublin I visited a dear friend and fellow doula's resting place. I definitely think that sometimes what helps the most in grief is having somewhere to go. Having a physical spot makes the love and loss feel held and anchored in the world. Grateful for this sunny mindful spot 🌳

Brilliant two days at the 2nd International Death Literacies Symposium in Brussels this week. Exciting to hear from current PhD researchers including Stephanie Crawford👏. Great to be there with fellow @eoldoulauk.bsky.social colleagues to speak about the doula approach in building DL

I realise I am very behind in only just reading this but it is excellent and I'd highly recommend. Does anyone know if there are similar roll-outs of patient information videos to explain life-sustaining treatment realities and options in the UK?

Knowing where to start with advance planning can be hard. I love these simple (but profound) qs from Angelo Volandes. If you feel able, share your answers to these w/ people important to you - a gift to them and increases the chance care you receive will be aligned with your wishes #AdvancePlanning

Great to be back at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals delivering two full-day workshops for clinical staff on navigating end of life - dying, death, and bereavement for @eoldoulauk.bsky.social. These workshops are always fully booked (+waiting list) and we hear how needed these spaces/conversations are

One of my favourite things about being an end of life doula is being surrounded by strong, compassionate women, all with their own inspiring story that brought them to this work. Our last get together as @eoldoulauk.bsky.social Committee before we welcomed our new incoming Board 💚 #EndofLifeDoula

Not entirely convinced by this as when I worked in NHS Talking Therapies, people were marked as starting treatment at their initial assessment call rather than when actually starting treatment (often years later) to meet 6 week target. I hope it's changed but even if it has comparison isn't possible

My PhD research included a comparison of end of life doulas', doctors', and nurses' levels of death competency as well as a detailed exploration of their first, and their most memorable, experiences of being present at the death of a person they were caring for. #DeathCompetency #EndOfLifeDoula

I was very pleased to be invited to take part in the brilliant annual Lifting the Lid Festival again in November last year, this time as part of an international end of life doula panel. Here is one of my answers when asked about our own preparedness for death #EndofLifeDoula #DeathDoula

I am very interested in the possible link between nature connectedness and death anxiety. Another topic for the 'don't think about this until you've submitted the current papers you are writing!' pile #DeathAnxiety #DeathCompetency

The 1st step in overcoming death anxiety is recognising that you experience it. The 2nd step is identifying what about death/dying makes you anxious. This can be reassuring - it is usually a specific aspect of this topic, making the issue seem more manageable. #DeathAnxiety #DeathCompetency
