Personally, I would be thrilled with any secondhand item in good condition if it was something I needed or wanted. I often purchase secondhand items and would have no problem receiving them as a gift. Receive in the spirit in which it is intended, I say.

You don't have to go into debt to have a credit card. It's a tool to be used wisely and as needed. I've rarely paid interest on my credit cards and I've had some accounts for over 20 years now.
